I saw a new social media site today and if I’m honest, it looks pretty cool. But I already have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. In an ever increasingly connected world is there a point in which we need to unplug? If I were to just spend 5 minutes on each of the big 4 social media sites a day I would spend 20 minutes a day or 140 minutes each week. That’s over 2 hours of my week on a smart phone or computer trying to find out what’s happening in the lives of other people.
If we extend that math out over the course of a year it’s 121.6 hours of my life spent on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. That’s more than 5 consecutive days each year spent on a social media platform. If all the studies are correct this is about ½ the time the average social media user actually spend on these sites. I know for me personally I spend collectively about an hour a day looking at some sort of social media and I’d bet many of you do too. That’s 15 days each year!
What can you do with an extra 15 days per year? How many more sales could be made? How many more people can be helped? How much fun could I have had with my family? What kind of relationships would I be able to establish? I absolutely think social media is great, and I know we’re all just trying to figure this internet thing out. But when I look over my schedule and how I’m trying to create more time to do make a difference, I can’t help but find 15 extra days a year that gets to go to Facebook and Twitter instead of my family and friends.
Question: If you magically were given 15 more days a year, what would you do?
