Did you ever have a desire to do something different? Ever feel like you were meant for something bigger or greater? Like a race car driver or astronaut? I have a 3 year old son so we’ve been talking a lot about what we want to be when we grow up. For him, it changes from day to day. One day he wants to be an astronaut and the next it’s to be a fireman.
What I find fascinating about these discussions is that income and money never enter the equation about his dream job. Ask me and I certainly have a salary figure in mind and if the job doesn’t provide at least that, then it’s out of the question.
Now this is not because of my desire to be filthy rich, but because of my former desire to own one of everything in the entire world. But at 3 years old, it’s just about the dream. Running up credit cards and trading in cars like baseball cards built up a mountain of debt for us. A mountain that only can be maintained by a salary and a salary that can only be attained by 70 hour work weeks and various part time jobs with little or no room for family time. The debt had stolen our ability to dream.
Fortunately the days of working to the bone are over for us and we’re getting closer to the other side. But there for a while it felt like we had lost all hope. Debt had stolen the peace in our home, the peace in our marriage, and certainly the peace in our bank account.
What about you? Have you lived on more than you earn? What’s your plan to get back your life? If you could do any job in the world and you never made a dime doing it, what would it be? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
